Talking Baseball

The Generals have the day off, but we never take days off here at Generally Speaking. Well, except for all those days that we don’t post. Anyways, I’ve had the opportunity to do some great interviews lately that I think all Mariners, Generals and baseball fans might find interesting.

Obviously, it seems as though the new front office is already having a positive effect on the farm for Seattle. Coming into Wednesday’s off day, the Generals are 12-7 and atop the North Division. They’ve only dropped one series to this point. The new approach and emphasis on the minors has been refreshing to be a part of, if only tangentially.

Someone who has great perspective on this change is Mariners’ Assistant General Manager and Vice President Jeff Kingston. Kingston was with the team under former GM Jack Zduriencik, and now works in a similar capacity for Jerry Dipoto. He stopped by Jackson last week, and was nice enough to take almost 20 minutes with me.

Mike Micucci is new to the organization as the minor league field coordinator. His job is all-encompassing, essentially serving as an intermediary between what the front office is trying to do and implement that with the different affiliates. He has a long history in the game, having worked with the Cubs, Rangers and Angels before moving to the Mariners. Micucci even played for the Diamond Jaxx in the team’s first two seasons in 1998 and 1999.

Jim Pankovits is anything but new to Jackson. Jackson’s manager from 2011 to 2013 still works in the organization as a roving instructor, and he makes his way back to West Tennessee periodically. I chatted with him about his current role and also the 2012 Jackson squad he took to the Southern League Championship Series.

Lastly, I chatted with Dylan Unsworth after his last start in Pensacola. The South African righty has surrendered just a pair of earned runs in his first 15.2 innings this year. This is his second year with the Generals. I talked to him about the biggest difference from year one to now, representing his native country and more.

The Generals are home for 10-straight games starting Thursday! Series against Mobile and Jacksonville feature all kinds of fun, including a pair of fireworks shows! Take a look at the full promotional schedule here.
